Please Put Your Oxygen Mask On

“When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.”

— Jean Shinoda Bolen
  • I still struggle with this on a day-to-day basis. So just know, this might be an easy lesson to read but a hard lesson to take action on. But you know the saying about when an airplane is going down you need to put your oxygen mask on first? Well, I personally feel this applies to life in general. And even saying this makes me feel so guilty and cringe! What will people think when I say that I need to do something for just MYSELF?!
  • But here’s some reasons why you should:
    • My husband jokes, but will say “a happy wife is a happy life” and although that might not be totally true, there is some truth in it. When you’re happy, others can feel it and by default it can put them in a better mood. If you’re stressed or unhappy they can feel that too.
    • If you aren’t taking time to take care of your body then your body someday won’t perform for you. And if you are having medical issues (sick, tired, etc.) then how are you going to take care of your family, your house, your job?
    • Some people say AFTER they got sick it was a blessing in disguise as it made them slow down and reassess what they needed and/or what was important to them. Well honey, here is your message to take the time NOW and not wait till you get sick. It’s way more fun to do fun things when you aren’t sick than when you are going through chemo or other illnesses, trust me, I’ve been there!
    • It’s our obligation to give ourselves space to do the things that make us happy. We owe it to ourselves, to our families and friends, and to the world. We need a world full of happier people, not burned out individuals.

Ho Ho Ho – A Holiday Message:

  • I send this message out now because many of us are going into the holiday season and we let go of the things that make us happy for family obligations. This is necessary at times, but don’t lose sight of what YOU need over these holidays. If you give up on your needs, you may have resentment and/or frustration towards family and friends. So really, for the good of all those you’re around, do what you need to make yourself happy this holiday season….and for the future too!

Being a YES Person…most of the time:

  • I’m a “YES” person by default! I want to do it all and I typically pile on a lot to try to achieve this. But I am learning that by saying yes to one thing that means I’m saying no to something else. So keep this in mind before you commit to activities, is this really how you want to spend your time?
    • My friends know this too. They know I’m not the person that will join them for a drink as that’s not really my thing, but I will happily have a beer with them after we get a mountain bike ride in. I’ve learned to be okay with saying no to invitations and making up where I can and want too.

What Does Self Care Look Like To You?

  • Not sure where to start for some self love?
    • If you did the exercises on the newsletter we sent a few months ago then you should have made a list of what sets your soul on fire. Pick something there.
      • If you didn’t see that newsletter you can read it HERE.
    • My mom has a rule that every day she is going to do one FUN thing for herself. So take a few minutes to write out what you find fun and start there.
    • No time to figure it out now? Then just start with a walk outside. Or choose an activity you have told yourself you’d do when you had more time in your life and go do that tomorrow.
    • Sidenote- let’s normalize taking breaks in the middle of the workday for a walk or something refreshing. I never did this when I was a W2 employee as I had guilt that I was supposed to be in front of the computer from 9-5 the entire time. But if you are business owner, push your peeps to go outside! They’ll come back more productive and full of new ideas and energy! You will too! 🙂

Place Oxygen Masks on Your Loved Ones Next:

  • As the flight attendant tells us, once you have your mask secure then go help others around you. So, as you are figuring out what you might need this holiday season and in the future, remember to think about what those around you may need as well.
    • Is your significant other an introvert that expels a lot of energy over the holidays? Perhaps you need to build in some “quiet time” for them while you’re with your crazy, loud, fun, energetic family.
    • Is your toddler overstimulated by the holidays? They may need extra snuggles to help them through.
    • Another good reminder- who do you know spending the holidays alone? Can they join some of your festivities? If not, even a text or phone call can go a long way. So, think about that now before the festivities start and compile a list of people to reach out too!

We hope you have a fabulous holiday season full of yummy treats, good times with family and friends, and a little (or a lot) of space for yourself!

Plan For “Failure” This Holiday Season

“Giving up on a goal because of a setback is like slashing your other 3 tires because you have a flat.”

The holidays are here and although they are stressful, fun, crazy, exciting, whatever you want to say, they can also wreak havoc on your nutrition and fitness goals. So here’s some friendly reminders that I hope help you stay mostly on track.

Nutrition:

  • First off, let the guilt go and let yourself enjoy some of the holiday shenanigans. If you don’t go too deep down the rabbit hole you’ll be just fine and can pull yourself back out once they’re over. It’s a time to be festive and merry with family and friends so if you really want a glass of wine, or a sugar cookie, then go for it. And if you do it, try to let the guilt go!
  • That being said, think about how you want to feel after the holidays. In years past I’ve definitely come back from Christmas vacation a little heavier and feeling like crap. I’m trying to go into this season with a realistic and achievable goal of enjoying myself but not too much. Truth be told, it’s usually easier for me to just abstain completely than moderate but I’m working on moderation goals. I want to be able to eat the sugar cookie with my kids while we’re baking them, but I don’t have to have 2,3 or even 4 in one day!
    • By the way, anyone else still working on moderation goals with all this dang leftover Halloween candy?!
  • Plan ahead! You can carry food on the airplanes, in your car, and yes it’s weird to pack your own food when visiting family but who cares, you do other weird stuff with them and they stlil love you. So plan ahead for what you’ll need. Healthy bars over a snickers at the airport can go a long way. Carrots instead of chips, etc.
  • Also, eating out can be expensive and at times unhealthy so if you are going on a trip, take pictures of your favorite recipes before you leave so you can make some home cooked meals. And I recommend finding 1-2 recipes that you can make with minimal food and quickly. I’m happy to share some of my go-to meals if you’d like.

Fitness:

  • Just like nutrition there is a healthy balance of resting. Sometimes your mind and body needs the time off so don’t be scared of it. Just enjoy it. Or focus on slightly different activities if you need/want too?
    • If you’re a CrossFitter like me, maybe it’s a great time to do yoga for the week (and if you’re a Crossfitter you know this is definitely needed in your life).
    • If you are visiting somewhere warm, pack those hiking shoes and get out for a walk with family.
    • If you are visiting somewhere cold, rent cross country skis and be active that way. It’s a great bonding experience with family/friends, it will be more memorable then sitting on the coach stuffing your face (although that is nice and needed too at times), and it is great for your body to mix it up!
  • Again, plan ahead:
    • If you are a Crossfitter – it’s so fun to drop into other gyms but check their hours. I went to Sun Valley last year and was so excited to drop in to their gym and didn’t realize they closed down for the whole week of Christmas break. Oops.
    • Plan out what times you’ll go to the gym if you still plan to go- FYI, mornings are the best when you’re on trips, even my night owl husband agrees!
    • Plan out workouts you can do in a pinch. I would LOVE to share some at home workouts you can do if you need some.
    • Pack your own stuff. I typically bring a pair of dumbbells with me on trips so I can still get some weights in.
    • And if you don’t have the room for any equipment, there are still no excuses. I once did pullups on a tree branch outside the Excalibur hotel on the Las Vegas strip. Click HERE for proof. Feel free to laugh. 🙂
  • Be a person that runs in the rain.
    • No one (or very few) people actually want to go for a run in the rain, so this is where discipline comes in. Create enough discipline in your life that no matter how you FEEL you’ll follow through on your actions.
  • Build in contingency plans for when things get derailed. For example, you plan that you’ll workout once you arrive at your destination on a trip, but then your airplane is delayed 5 hours and arrival is after midnight. Well, have a backup plan to do a workout in the airport. If that feels too funny, then just tell yourself you’ll walk up and down the flight of stairs five times. Which, by the way, let’s normalize working out in random places and not let it be weird!
    • Basically make a plan for when you’ll workout, what your workout will be, AND when you’ll make up that workout if something comes up and you have to change the day/time/location.
  • Lastly, just remember it doesn’t have to be pretty. You don’t have to have the same intensity or style of workout on your trip but moving just a little bit over not moving at all will make you feel better and happier!

So what are your favorite at home workouts? What are your favorite snacks on the go? We’d love to improve our arsenal of how to deal with staying somewhat on track this holiday season. And again, enjoy the holidays too!

Set Your Business On FIRE!

“Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion, you must set yourself on fire!”

If you read our previous post you hopefully took the time to make a list of trips, adventures, and other activities you want to accomplish in 2023. I know that I’m excited, are you? Next to do though, is to plan out your business goals for 2023.

Once that NYE’s ball drops, it’s game time! You’ll have 365 days to achieve those professional goals and propel yourself to success. So let’s start planning now so that when January 1st hits, you are ready to roll.

Big Why & Setting Goals:

Before we take action we must first know where we want to end up. So grab that dream book and let’s get to work!!

Think about your BIG WHY- this is your purpose, mission, need, what fuels you with focus and energy, it’s the reason you are excited to get up in the morning.

  • Now reflect on 2022:
    • Think about where you are at right now and what do you wish you accomplished in your business this year? Was it more sales? More leverage? Better connections? Hiring? Firing? What feels unfinished?
  • Now think about the future:
    • In exactly one year, what are you hoping to accomplish in your business? Five Years? Someday?

**Don’t edit, just write**

  • Now from your list you created, choose a few of your favorites and really think through what they’ll look like and write about what you are visualizing. Add a timeline to when you’d like to accomplish them.
  • Lastly, break down each of those four goals into actionable items down to the right NOW task. I love this helpful image from the book, The One Thing by Gary Keller & Jay Papasan to help you do this:

Achieving That Goal & Accountability:

Great job, you have your goals written out, woohoo! Now what? They’re no good if you don’t take action AND track them to ensure you are going to achieve them.

  • It’s easy to be fired up when thinking about your goals, but it’s not so easy to stay fired up with the mundane every day tasks needed to achieve them. That’s where accountability comes in. And let’s be honest, being accountable to ourselves rarely works. So I’d love you to take the time right now to write a list of people you could enroll to be an accountability partner. Some great examples are: parents (they always want to see you succeed), spouses (they’ll want your income too ;)), someone else in your industry or another industry, COACHES! Heck, enlist your kids, they’ll love it and it’s a great bonding/parenting activity.
  • Now list out how you’ll track whether you are hitting your goal. You need measurable numbers throughout the process, not just numbers at the end, but something measurable throughout so that you know monthly or even weekly if you are on track, ahead, or behind.
    • If you are a Realtor, I have a great resource on how to break this down to achieve the net income you want. Message me today and I’ll happily share it!
  • Then setup a time with your new accountability partner to meet monthly to go over your numbers. And YOU should be meeting weekly with yourself to gather those numbers and review them.

Here’s a graphic from Keller Williams Business Planning Clinic that I love that you could use with your accountability partner:

Thoughts to Ponder:

  • Have you heard of the rule of 80/20? If not, a quick summary is 80% of your results comes from 20% of your actions. So hopefully your actionable items you created are your 20% and then you turn those into your “HAVE-to-do-list”.
    • We all have a to-do list. But the most successful people make sure to achieve the items on their “Have-to-do-list”. So make sure you add your actionable items to that and each day work on this list first, then you work on your other to-do lists.
  • Remember, results are not immediate, so have patience, don’t get distracted, and keep grinding! It will be worth it in the end!
  • Lastly, share those goals! On Social media, with a vision board (vision board parties are the best), whatever it may be, share them because: Individuals with written goals are 42.1% more likely to achieve them. Individuals with accountability are 77.6% more likely to achieve them. Thanks Gail Matthews for doing the research to figure these stats out. 🙂

We hope this has helped you visualize your professional goals, write out actionable items and/or helped you in any way towards a successful 2023. We’d love you to email us today what your business goals are and more importantly if there is any way we can help you achieve those! Working together is better!

If You Fail to Plan, Then Plan to Fail

“There are DREAMERS and there are PLANNERS, the planners make their dreams come true.”

-Edwin Louis Cole

Every February I gather my closest friends for a summer planning session. We get together for dinner, drinks, and come with our calendars in tow. I tell everyone before this dinner to have a list of trips, adventures, hikes, bike rides, kiddo events, as well as previous obligations with work and other personal events compiled. Then we hash out what we want our summer to look like.

I started this because I realized a few years back when I didn’t do this that by the time summer came around everyone was already too booked up and we couldn’t sync up for family camping trips and other adventures. My girlfriends poke a little fun at me but here’s the thing- I was able to do a lot of amazing things in 2022. Curious what I did? Check out my 2022 Review Video HERE.

But this wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for my planning session in February! You may be asking me why I’m telling you all of this since it’s not February yet. Well, NOW is the time for you to start compiling YOUR list. I personally love doing this now because summer and fall are winding down and it’s a great time for reflection. AND if you want to book 2023 camping spots a lot of them become available to reserve on January 1st, so you might need to plan even earlier.

So grab that dream book I mentioned on our previous Elevate Livin’ Life newsletter and get ready to dream and write some more.

  • What do you wish you did this past summer?
    • What trips did you not take that you wanted too?
    • What trails did you not get a chance to explore?
    • What people did you miss out on bonding with?
  • What do you want to do again next year?
    • Was there something you did that you absolutely loved and need to make it an annual thing?!
  • What do you want to NOT do?
    • In 2020 and 2021 we did some major house projects over the summer and I specifically requested that we take the summer of 2022 off so we could focus on FUN! It was amazing! And the house is still standing and is patiently awaiting for us to love on it some more another time. 🙂
  • What else do you want to accomplish next year?
    • From spiritual to nutrition, to all the different areas in life, what do you want to put on your 2023 to do list? Look at that list you compiled a few weeks ago of all your dreams- can any of them be accomplished in 2023? Why not take that Dream vacation?! Or start that new workout plan? OR perhaps it is the year to focus on improving your house?

Lastly, it’s a great time of year to think about the gear that you’ll need to accomplish these goals because you can score some sweet deals on end of season sales, Black Friday and/or just adding them to your Christmas wishlist!

Happy planning! And as always we’d love to hear what you have on your 2023 calendar as we’re always looking to be inspired with other people’s goals! Share with us today!

Achieve Those Dreams!

So here’s the thing, if you don’t set yourself up for success by building out the daily habits to achieve your live worth living, then you aren’t going to achieve it!

In our last Elevate Livin’ Life newsletter we had you do some activities to determine what sets your soul on fire. Now let’s discuss how to prioritize your ACTIONS and TIME to make sure you achieve them.

  1. Focus on one of your big goals you set for yourself and if you haven’t done so, decide when you want to achieve this (be realistic but push yourself).
  2. Now work backwards from that big goal to figure out what you need to do to achieve it.
    1. Where do you need to be in one year to achieve this goal? 6 months? 1 month? 1 week? 1 day? And most importantly what do you need to do RIGHT NOW to achieve it?

Example of this:
In 2011 my husband was finishing his clinicals for physical therapy school and we had a 12 week assignment in a small mountain town in New Hampshire. We had learned about a hiking checklist called the NH 48 (48 peaks over 4000 feet) and thought, wouldn’t it be cool if we did this? Is it even possible to do this in 12 weeks?! It felt like a big, uncomfortable, and scary goal. We liked hiking and had done it occasionally throughout life but we weren’t hardcore hikers by any means. But we went for it and oh my gosh, it’s still one of my most favorite summers ever!

So here is a quick version of how we played out setting our life up for this goal-

  1. Big Scary Goal: Hike NH 48 in 12 weeks.
  2. First step for us: QUICK research on how long each hike was and making a list of said hikes with estimate time frame. I say quick so I didn’t get lost in the rabbit hole and never took action NOR did I want to dig too deep and realize how uncomfortable it was going to get at times.
  3. Next step: Timeblock our life
    1. We took out our calendar of the next 12 weeks and penciled in prior engagements (social and professional). Then we got to work time blocking when we’ll do those hikes. Short ones after work, long ones on weekends, and even a few two-a day hikes. We also time blocked out the time we’d need to do further research on each hike for that week, preparing the food and supplies we’d need for those hikes, etc.
  4. It took us 11 weeks and 1 day to do it! Photo above is us on our last peak. -weren’t we babies?!

So, take your big goal and think backwards to what you need to achieve it so that tomorrow you know the first step you need to take. If you want to run a marathon in a year, perhaps tomorrow’s first step is downloading a running program or hiring a coach (I know a good one if that’s the case!).

Things to keep in mind when you are building out your new life on how to achieve these goals:

  • Time block is Key!!!
    • You must first figure out how much time you need to achieve your goals and once you know that, start time blocking it into your calendar.
    • When you say yes to one thing you’ll be saying no to another. So make sure you know what you’ll be saying no to and that you’re okay with it. When we hiked the NH 48 we had to say no to friend invites to do other fun things. We knew we wanted to achieve this goal and talked about what we’d have to give up and said we were okay with it. So when the time came, although it was hard and sad, we were prepared to say “no thanks, we’re unable to at this time”.
      • Protect your goals! Others don’t know them, and/or might not care as much and try to pull you away from what matters to you at that moment.
    • If you erase, you must replace. Life happens and stuff comes up so it’s good to be flexible when needed but always make sure you reschedule the activities that will lead you to your goals! Don’t just cancel them all together.
    • There will always be things left unfinished. Laundry can be folded tomorrow but you can’t always make up your workout.
    • Read The One Thing by Gary Keller & Jay Papasan for more amazing tips on this!
  • Willpower is a Battery!!
    • The more mental decisions you make and/or the more times you test your willpower, the more you drain it.
      • Some decisions you can’t avoid but some you can. Lay out your outfit you want to wear each day the night before so you tax your willpower less first thing in the morning.
      • Don’t allow yourself to make important decisions later in the day when your willpower is more taxed.
        • What’s for dinner? Decide the night before so when you’re tired you don’t default to the easy option of drive through that you’ll regret later.
    • Another Great Book: The Willpower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal
  • Be growth minded!
    • Your past history will not dictate your success if you set the right habits in place and believe you can achieve this. You can change (if you really want too)!
    • Keep on Reading: Mindset by Carol Dweck
  • Set yourself up for success.
    • It’s not only about the time you’ll need to achieve tasks, but what food will you need or what gear? Plan ahead so you can’t use excuses that you didn’t have the right equipment to achieve your goal!
    • Make a decision for who you are ahead of unfortunate circumstances. It’s easy to go for a run when it’s sunny and nice out. But when it’s raining and your willpower is low it’s much harder to still do it. Make a decision BEFORE bad weather on if you are a person that is determined to achieve your goal so much that you will run in the rain? If you aren’t, that’s fine, but then you must be okay with not achieving your goal.
    • Create buy-in with those around you. You may need to let your family, friends, and/or work know of your goals as sometimes you’ll need their help, you’ll need to say no to them, and/or you’ll need them to just hold you accountable!
      • Speaking of that, it’s great to have a coach or accountability partner.
  • The Time is NOW and No Regrets
    • A close friend of mine talks about how her dad worked so hard all his life and kept saving his money, big trips, adventures, etc. for retirement. Then he passed away before he retired and never got to go for them. Stop saying “someday” and do it now!
    • Live your life so you don’t say “I wish I had…” instead you say “I’m so glad I did”. Yes it will take more work, energy, time but you won’t regret it!
  • Remember this will get hard
    • There will be times when you want to throw in the towel but stick with it and hopefully you set your life up with the previous recommendations so when those times come it will be easier (not easy) to stick with it.
    • Truth be told, a productive, fulfilling life can be exhausting. But it can also be exhilarating and amazing too!
    • I highly recommend reading: Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins.
  • As the Chinese said:
    • “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now”.

There are so many amazing resources out there to help you build our your best life and lots of additional ideas. I just hope the points I shared help start you in the right direction to you building a life you won’t regret and one you’ll be stoked to look back on!

What Sets Your Soul on Fire?

So what does YOUR fulfilled life look like?

My previous post talked about the importance of living your best life. But perhaps you read that and thought, well what does that mean? What does my best life look like? Or perhaps right now you are feeling in a rut? Does every day feel the same and isn’t filling your cup? Perhaps you need to shake things up but you aren’t sure how or what you actually need.
If so- STOP what you are doing right now! And follow these steps:

  1. Grab a piece of paper and pen.
  2. Think to yourself, I have just been told I have 2 months to live.
  3. Close your eyes and let that really SOAK in. You have until December 3rd, 2022 and that’s IT! Not another Christmas, not another New Year, nada, (hopefully this isn’t causing permanent anxiety to set in).
  4. Now, Visualize what the next two months look like. If you have perfect health up until that two month mark, what would you do?
  5. Write it down. Write it ALL down. Don’t question yourself, don’t analyze, just let the thoughts flow and write.
  6. Now take a few minutes to clear your mind.
  7. Reflect back on your life up until this point and ask yourself these questions:
    • What are my most favorite memories?
    • When have I felt the most ALIVE?
    • What would I change about my past if I could?
    • What would I love to DO again?
  8. Start writing!
  9. Lastly, erase the two month deadline we previously worked with and now think to yourself, what do I want to accomplish in my life? Before death comes a knockin’, what do I want to know I achieved?
    • If you are drawing some blanks you can look at past photos of your LIFE and see which photos really stir up reactions in yourself; which ones make your mind race of how to DO it again? Which photos make you remember a time that set your soul on FIRE?
    • You can also think of these categories to help you dream of goals to accomplish in each area of your life:
      • Professional
      • Physical Fitness
      • Adventure: Hobbies/Activities/Trips
      • Relationships
      • Financial
      • Legacy
      • Creative
      • Character
      • Intellectual
      • Spiritual
  10. Start writing!

Hopefully from this exercise you were really able to DREAM and dream big, without limitations. Now go buy yourself a journal or notebook that you can transfer all of these dreams into this book. Moving forward I encourage you to look at this often, add to it frequently, and continue to dream big.  If you can turn it into a one page document to post in your office, or bathroom mirror to look at daily, that’s even better! I have mine in a composition book that I’ve carried around since March 2016. I’m happy to share photos of mine if it helps you create yours! Just message me today to request snapshots of it.

Next post we’ll talk about how to make these dreams come true because what’s the point of them if you don’t take ACTION to achieve them?

Until then, I’d love to hear what some of your favorite dreams are? What in this list gave you the most excitement and really got your mind going? Share with us today via text, email or on social media!

“Do Not Fear Death, Fear the Unlived Life” Natalie Babitt

Please, please, please, I beg of you to set your life up that when death comes a knockin’, you may be mad and not ready to go, but you at least feel FULL and SATISFIED with how you spent your life. Because here’s the thing- we as humans feel awfully immortal until it smacks us in the face. And then you realize how precious life is and how fast it can all change.

In 2015, I had my first real life experience with this. At the young age of 28 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. We got the “you have cancer call” on a Thursday and it wasn’t for another five days until we got the full diagnosis and man, was that the longest and scariest weekend of my life!  We prayed it was caught early but in the back of our minds we couldn’t help but think, what if it wasn’t, what if this is the end? And I’ll tell you what, that weekend I do remember thinking:

I’m so glad I have had such a fun and amazing LIFE.

I really made these 28 years count!

From the friendships to family relationships, to the career and professional life and of course to my adventurous and active life. I really was stoked on what I accomplished. Yes, I was scared if it was the end and I would have been pretty mad if it was, but I was at least glad I had made those years count.

How many times have you heard stories of someone dying young, or getting sick and you thought to yourself, “I’m so glad that isn’t me”. Well honey, I hate to break it to you but sometime in the future that is going to be you. So please, make it count. Please, LIVE your LIFE! Because once your time is up there is nothing you can do to change the past. So make sure you are setting your life up that you won’t want to change it!
